Pension to be provided to STs, SCs, and women in Jharkhand starting at age 50

Jharkhand Government Approves Reduction in Qualifying Age for Pension for Women and ST/SC Categories

The Hemant Soren government in Jharkhand has made a significant decision that will benefit women and individuals belonging to the scheduled tribe and scheduled caste categories. The government has approved a proposal to reduce the qualifying age for pension for these groups from 60 years to 50 years. This move is expected to benefit around 18 lakh individuals in the state.

Cabinet secretary Vandana Dadel announced the approval of the proposal by the women, child development, and social security department. She mentioned that the decision to amend the existing rules will have a positive impact on a large number of people in the state.

This decision comes on the heels of an announcement made by Chief Minister Hemant Soren last month, where he stated that tribals and dalits in the state would be eligible for pension benefits at the age of 50 instead of 60. The state currently has around 35.68 lakh beneficiaries receiving pension benefits, showing an 82% increase over the past four years under the Soren government.

In addition to the pension decision, the cabinet also approved a new scheme to provide special kits to poor pregnant women in the state for their welfare. These kits, estimated to cost ₹1,500 each, will include items like a new cotton sari and mosquito nets. Approximately 6 lakh women are expected to benefit from this scheme, with ₹22.2 crore allocated for it in the current fiscal year.

Furthermore, the cabinet approved the appointment of former JMM legislator Yogendra Prasad as the chairman of the state backward classes commission. Prasad, a two-term legislator from Gomia, currently holds a position in the UPA coordination committee with the status of a minister of state.

Overall, these decisions by the Jharkhand government aim to provide support and assistance to marginalized communities in the state, showcasing a commitment to social welfare and inclusivity.
