Breaking Stereotypes: 56-Year-Old Woman Aces Powerlifting in a Sari
56-Year-Old Woman Breaks Stereotypes by Winning Powerlifting Competition in a Sari
CHENNAI: Somasundari Manoharan, a 56-year-old woman, made headlines recently by winning a powerlifting competition at Strength System in Royapettah while wearing a sari. The competition, organized by her son Karthikeyan Manoharan, owner of Madras Barbell, showcased her strength and determination to break stereotypes and inspire others.
Somasundari’s fitness journey began six years ago when she started working out to relieve back pain. Her dedication and hard work paid off as she not only overcame her pain but also excelled in various exercises, including deadlifts, bench press, squats, and more. Her success motivated her daughter-in-law, Manimozhi, to join the gym as well, creating a strong bond between the two women.
Despite facing challenges with dress codes in competitions, Somasundari emphasized the importance of allowing people to wear comfortable clothes while working out. She believes that restrictions on attire can discourage many women from participating in physical activities.
To spread their message of inclusivity and fitness, the family collaborated with Decathlon to organize more powerlifting events. They also share workout videos and fitness tips on their Instagram page @madras_barbell to inspire others to prioritize their health.
Karthikeyan, a seasoned trainer, encourages people, especially women in middle age, to explore fitness without feeling intimidated. He provides alternative exercises and creates a gender-neutral space at the gym to make everyone feel welcome.
In addition to regular exercise, the family follows a proper diet rich in protein from sources like meat, eggs, pulses, and soya. Somasundari’s goal is to continue working out with discipline and increase her deadlift weight to 120 kg while exploring new workouts.
Somasundari’s story serves as a reminder that age and attire should not limit anyone from pursuing their fitness goals. Her determination and success in powerlifting in a sari have inspired many to break barriers and prioritize their health and well-being.
