Tragic Death of 57-Year-Old Woman Following Routine Procedure at Royal Glamorgan Hospital: An Inquest Reviewing the Circumstances
The tragic death of a 57-year-old woman, Janet Williams, following a routine procedure at Royal Glamorgan Hospital has left her family devastated and seeking answers. Miss Williams, described as a “fitness fanatic” who loved her job and colleagues, developed sepsis after complications from a procedure to deal with bile duct stones.
The inquest into her death, led by senior coroner Graeme Hughes, began on Monday, May 20 and is set to explore the nature of her care and the circumstances surrounding her passing. Miss Williams had undergone an ERCP procedure to address bile duct stones, but sadly passed away just three days after the surgery.
Her health leading up to the procedure was described as “very good,” and she had been training for the Newport 10k. Despite previous health issues, including heart disease and gallstones, Miss Williams had not experienced significant impacts on her day-to-day life in recent years.
Following the procedure, Miss Williams began experiencing discomfort and increasing pain, leading to a diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. Despite efforts to manage her condition, she tragically passed away on Monday, October 18. A post-mortem examination revealed that sepsis, likely triggered by the procedure, was the primary medical cause of her death.
The inquest will delve into the decisions made regarding Miss Williams’ treatment post-procedure, including the amounts of fluids administered and the timing of her transfer to intensive care. The family expressed concerns about the communication they received from hospital staff regarding Miss Williams’ condition, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in such cases.
As the inquest continues, the family and loved ones of Janet Williams seek closure and justice for her untimely passing. The lessons learned from this tragedy may serve to prevent similar incidents in the future, emphasizing the importance of thorough and careful medical care in all procedures.
