Woman with Pacemaker Defies Odds to Stay Fit and Healthy
Julie Work, a seemingly healthy and athletic woman from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, never imagined she would need a pacemaker. However, after passing out while driving and discovering she had a serious heart condition, Work’s life took an unexpected turn.
At 49 years old, Work’s episode behind the wheel was the first warning sign that something was wrong with her body. Fortunately, she didn’t sustain any injuries or harm anyone else in the incident. Reflecting on the experience, Work realized that as a woman, she had been neglecting her own health while prioritizing others.
Following a visit to her OBGYN and a referral to cardiologist Dr. Pam Marcovitz at the Ministrelli Women’s Heart Center, Work was diagnosed with an AV block, a condition that required her to get a pacemaker. Despite her dedication to fitness and healthy living, Work couldn’t escape her genetic predisposition to heart issues.
Dr. David Haines, a cardiac electrophysiologist, performed the surgery to implant the pacemaker. Despite her initial concerns about how the device would impact her active lifestyle, Work was determined to continue her fitness routine. With adjustments made to accommodate her intense workouts, Work was able to push herself even further than before.
Now, after overcoming the challenges of surgery and adjusting to life with a pacemaker, Work is stronger and healthier than ever. She has become an inspiration to those around her, showing that with determination and the right medical care, it is possible to thrive despite unexpected health challenges.
