The Importance of Calcium in Maintaining Overall Health

While 99% of the body’s calcium is stored in bones, the remaining 1% is found in blood, muscles, and other tissues.

The body carefully regulates calcium levels to ensure proper functioning. When calcium levels drop in the blood, the parathyroid hormone signals the bones to release calcium into the bloodstream, while also activating vitamin D to enhance calcium absorption in the intestines. Conversely, when the body has enough calcium, calcitonin works to lower calcium levels in the blood by inhibiting the release of calcium from bones.

It is important to consume an adequate amount of calcium through diet or supplements to meet the body’s needs. If calcium intake is insufficient, the body will extract calcium from bones, which can lead to bone loss over time. The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for calcium varies by age and gender, with women aged 19-50 advised to consume 1,000 mg daily and men aged 19-70 recommended to consume the same amount.

Calcium has been linked to various health conditions, including its potential role in lowering high blood pressure. While some studies suggest a connection between calcium intake and reduced blood pressure, further research is needed to establish definitive recommendations. Adequate calcium intake, along with physical activity, can help slow down bone loss and reduce the risk of fractures. Additionally, consuming calcium-rich foods has been shown to lower the risk of kidney stones, while calcium supplements may increase the risk.
