Exploring Mindfulness and Compassion with Thich Nhat Hanh’s Senior Disciple
Renowned Buddhist leader Thich Nhat Hanh, known for his advocacy of mindfulness and engaged Buddhism, is currently recovering from a stroke at Plum Village, the monastery he founded in France. In a recent interview with one of his senior disciples, Brother Phap Dung, the topic of managing fear and uncertainty in the current political climate was discussed.
Phap Dung emphasized the importance of addressing emotions like fear and anger before taking any action, as these negative emotions can cloud judgment and lead to destructive decisions. He highlighted the need for compassion and understanding, even towards those with differing views, without resorting to anger or hate.
When asked about engaging with family members who hold discriminatory views, Phap Dung advised against trying to convince them and instead suggested focusing on finding common ground and practicing non-judgmental listening. He stressed the importance of cultivating inner peace through meditation and mindfulness, which can then be shared with others.
In response to questions about the future and the recent US election, Phap Dung emphasized the role of the present moment in shaping the future. He encouraged community practice and engagement, highlighting the need to focus on positive actions and interactions rather than succumbing to fear and divisiveness.
Despite his health challenges, Thich Nhat Hanh remains actively involved in the community, nurturing trust, compassion, and love among his followers. His teachings continue to inspire mindfulness and compassion in
