The study found that women who consistently met the physical activity guidelines set by the World Health Organization had better physical functioning than those who did not adhere to the guidelines. Interestingly, the benefits of exercise were the same for women who began exercising at age 55 as those who had always been active.

For women in menopause, starting an exercise routine may be challenging due to symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and emotional upheaval. Dr. Sherry Ross, an OB/GYN and women’s health expert, recommends starting slowly and gradually increasing activity levels to avoid potential risks.

Despite life transitions and demands, experts stress the importance of midlife women taking time to prioritize their own health and well-being through regular exercise. Dr. Charlie Porter, a cardio-oncologist, emphasizes the role of exercise in maintaining strength, stamina, flexibility, and balance, which are crucial for maintaining independence and quality of life as women age.
